I started my jiu jitsu journey in August 2017 when my father invited me to train with him one night. I was a bit skeptical at first, but I didn't know how much jiu jitsu was about to change my life. As the night continued I fell more in love with everything about the sport. I was in awe when I learned the techniques, everyone at the academy was so welcoming and friendly, and everyone was willing to help me if I didn't understand something. Jiu jitsu completed a part of me I didn't know was missing. The more I went, the more I fell in love with BJJ! Now here I am 2 years into my jiu jitsu journey! (Thanks Dad!)
The pictures above are from my actual first day of class!
Stepping on the Mat
Stepping on the mat for the first time can be intimidating, but don't worry- it won't be as scary as you think it may be! Here are some tips to help you get through your first day of jiu jitsu.
Don't be afraid to make conversation the people in the academy before and after class! It will make your first day even better if you make a friend or two.
It's ok to ask for help! If you don't understand the technique your instructor or teammate will be more than willing to help you.
Don't get frustrated if you can't get the technique. Learning jiu jitsu does not happen overnight! It takes a lot of mat time and drilling to be able to start understanding techniques and implementing them in rolls- and that's ok! The more you go to class the more you will learn, and the more you practice the better you will get. Just keep trying!
Don't be offended if your coach doesn't let you roll on your first day. At my academy students are not able to start live-rolling until at least a few months of coming to class. It is nothing personal, your coach is just looking out for you so you don't hurt yourself and/or learn bad habits.
If you loved it, keep going! You will continue to grow the more you go!
HAVE FUN!
